The new face in Christian Spec Fiction has fangs...
Column
Fantasy
Ceese has been in her wolf state for too long, it's made her forget her manners, it's made her a little weird. Richard, on the other hand, is very polite -- when it suits him -- and knows all the tricks to looking normal. Being a Vampire is merely a nuisance. But when these two collide they will have to come to a place of understanding and grace. They will learn together what's most important.
Sue Dent is a pioneer in the Christian book market. She's the first author of a vampire/werewolf book for Christians. An oxymoron, you say? Not really. Actually, very far from it. I have long believed that the paradox of Vampires is the perfect vehicle to speak out for the torment we, as Christians, face when we fight our flesh. Sue was blessed to be the first on stage in this arena. Kudos to you, Sue, for all your hard work.
Now, the question is, does Sue's vehicle get us to our sought destination?
Most definitely. She has painted wonderful characters for us to follow and throws in a few fun things to balance out the darkness in the book.
Here are my reactions:
Negative...The point of view in this book tends to be jumpy. I could see that it's meant to be in omniscient, but it begins in third person and seems to stick to that for the most part until a third of the way through, then switches. For your average reader this won't be a stumbling block at all. The story will take them without diversion. But for me it was distracting.
Positive...The story really starts out with a bang. I'm sucked in immediately -- which for me is huge. I need that first thrust into oblivion to stay with the writer for several hundred pages. And it's a quick read. We don't languish in descriptions or back-story but get right to the characters and action. Ms. Dent is wonderful with characters and sets you up to love them immediately. Especially Richard.
Never Ceese is a fast read and will be a huge breath of fresh air for those tired of the usual CBA fodder. And the good news is, this is only book one. Book two is Forever Richard, which I'm really looking forward to.
