Sword Review: March 20 Update
This update is a very interesting editorial:
"Fantasy, Wire-taps, and the Blue-footed Booby: A Speculation on Irrelevance" by Daphne Charette
Many people say Fantasy and Science Fiction is an irrelevant genre, compared to "real" literature. Can they be certain?

I found Daphne's editorial to be very nicely crafted, and her point was interesting, as well. Thanks, Daphne, for sharing this!
And yes, WOW, what an interesting bird! |

Heya Raindancer! And thank you, Bill and Paul, for allowing me a place to 'have my say' and for taking the time to read it! Every time I am in the least inclined to vanity, all I have to do is look around. As much joy as I take in a story when it goes well, I can only vaguely imagine the Joy that created such an incredible, intricate, marvelous universe....

I live in the Seattle area, and much of the time because of the rain, our vision in directed downward at the grey wet sidewalks. But once in a while, the sky opens up, the sun comes out, and you can see all the way to Mt. Rainier, and the other direction to the spectacular Olympic range, with the blue water of the Sound and the trees made green by all that rain.
Nothing I will ever make will ever rival that. If the joy of creating is commeasurate with the joy of spectating, then Creation was indeed "good"!
Thanks for making me look up, Charette! |

| John Calvin (yes THAT John Calvin wrote: |
Since the perfection of blessedness consists in the knowledge of God, he has been pleased, in order that none might be excluded from the means of obtaining felicity, not only to deposit in our minds that seed of religion of which we have already spoken, but so to manifest his perfections in the whole structure of the universe, and daily place himself in our view, that we cannot open our eyes without being compelled to behold him. His essence, indeed, is incomprehensible, utterly transcending all human thought; but on each of his works his glory is engraven in characters so bright, so distinct, and so illustrious, that none, however dull and illiterate, can plead ignorance as their excuse. Hence, with perfect truth, the Psalmist exclaims, “He covereth himself with light as with a garment,” (Psalm 104:2); as if he had said, that God for the first time was arrayed in visible attire when, in the creation of the world, he displayed those glorious banners, on which, to whatever side we turn, we behold his perfections visibly portrayed. (39-40)
Therefore, though the effulgence which is presented to every eye, both in the heavens and on the earth, leaves the ingratitude of man without excuse, since God, ... holds forth to all, without exception, a mirror of his Deity in his works... (49) |

Yup. That pretty much says it all, doesn't it?
Thanks for sharing that, Bill. And Michael, it was my pleasure! |

Pixydust, thanks so much for posting that! I had to run off to work, so didn't get a chance to come back and say thank you. I'm still floored that people responded to it strongly enough to spontaneously start a forum discussion.
What a great feeling that is. |

This is one of the best written, and most enjoyable articles I've ever read. It impressed me as a writer and as a reader. Both the article itself and the picture of the blue-footed booby have stuck in my head wonderfully well.
The funny thing is, being able to picture the blue-footed booby stood me in good stead earlier today. My family occasionally eats lunch at a local eatery offering a trivia contest, which, if answered well enough, can reduce the cost of the bill. One of today's questions featured the blue-footed booby, and for the first time ever my family got a high enough score to win a free entre. If I'd not known that question we'd not have done well enough.
So, thank you for an excellent article, and a great lunch |

When I was in second and third grade, I read the Zoobooks series, a monthly short children's magazine with a different group of animals covered in each issue. The Seabrids issue had a picture of the blue-footed booby, which has stuck with me even though I've long forgotten everything else from that issue. At some point in my schooling we were required to create a paper-mache animal and I attempted a blue-footed booby, though a paint shortage caused it to end up as a red-footed booby instead.
I'm glad to see that my favorite seabird has been bouncing around in other people's heads as well. Great article. |
